Welcome to Release One of Snow White and Rose Red!

This is our version for Winter Jam 2024, and we're really proud of the work the team put in. So much original art work, compositions, and stellar voice acting.

We plan to keep enhancing over the month of January, with some additional art and sound effects. If you see a bug, please tell us. We will update through the month, trying to wrap all the additions up before the end of January to add to Once Upon a Time jam 2024.

Here I wanted to talk about how this story came about.

It started as part of yet another visual novel game jam. Yuri jam!

We wanted a story that could fit the wlw theme. Growing up, Snow White and Rose Red was always a favourite fairy tale of mine, and I've wanted to share its story. Two things stood out about it: 

First, it's the only fairy tale in my book  -- and that I still know -- that starts a PAIR or protagonists. Jack is alone, Cinderella is alone, Sleeping Beauty is alone. Story after story has one main character, but Snow White and Rose Red has two! In fact, the name of the story changes all over the place. In one place, it's Blue Eyes and Brown eyes. But the fact that there are two sisters as dual protagonists does not change.

Second, there's the bear. Who doesn't want a cuddly bear to come in from the snow to your home and wrestle with you by the fire. I want my bear friend!

But none of that is yuri. None of the above has girls romantically involved with one another. Instead, Snow White and Rose Red are sisters joined at the hip. The tale does have a love interest, though. Two of them! The bear is a prince for Snow White, and the prince has a brother for Rose Red.

Step One for Yuri Conversion: The prince is now a princess.

Easy.

But then the hard decision came, and we switched back and forth on this over weeks. Okay, I switched back and forth on this, and my poor team kept saying, "Wait, I thought Rose Red was her sister," followed by "Wait, I thought Rose Red was the Love Interest!" a week later.

In the end, it came down to this: If you pick up a romance with the names of two people on the front, you expect those two people to be the romantic pair. When you read a script titled "Romeo and Juliet," you expect Romeo to have the hots for Juliet. When you pick up a yuri named, "Adachi and Shimamura," you expect Adachi and Shimamura to eventually be interested in each other.

So, if this is Snow White and Rose Red, and it's yuri, then Snow White is gonna like Rose Red.

Therefore, Snow White and Rose Red are no longer sisters. Rose Red is the princess. We could have re-titled it, Snow White and the Bear Princess, but Snow White and Rose Red is the famous title.

Now, however, we needed to restore the sisterhood aspect of the story that is so fundamental.

Hello, Feathersoft!

And who will Feathersoft marry?

There's only one other character in the fairytale: an evil dwarf who has cursed the prince and whose long magical beard keeps getting caught in things.

Hello, Sarracenia! Rose Red's sister, but thought to be evil with long magical hair to be caught in things.

Every girl gets a girl. Every girl is therefore happy.

Voila, Yuri Snow White and Rose Red.
